The New Common Conditions Service at Backhouse Pharmacy

New Common Conditions Service in Irish Pharmacies – Now Available at Backhouse Pharmacy

Great news for patients across Ireland! Community pharmacies are now offering treatment for a range of everyday health conditions through the new Common Conditions Service — making it easier and faster to get the care you need.

Instead of waiting for a GP appointment for certain minor illnesses, you can now speak directly with a trained pharmacist who can assess and treat a range of common conditions — often providing prescription treatment where appropriate.

We’re delighted to share that this service is now available at Backhouse Pharmacy.

What Is the Common Conditions Service?

Introduced by the Health Service Executive (HSE), this service allows pharmacists to assess and treat specific common conditions without the need for a GP visit.

It’s designed to:

  • Improve access to care

  • Reduce waiting times

  • Ease pressure on GP services

  • Provide safe, convenient treatment close to home

Your pharmacist is highly trained in managing minor illnesses and will refer you to a GP if your symptoms require further medical review.

What Conditions Are Covered?

The service currently includes treatment for the following conditions (eligibility criteria apply):

  • Uncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTIs) (for women aged 16–65)

  • Impetigo

  • Shingles

  • Oral thrush

  • Conjunctivitis

  • Threadworms

  • Haemorrhoids

Your pharmacist will carry out a private consultation to assess your symptoms and determine the most appropriate treatment.

Who Can Use the Service?

Not everyone is eligible for this service. For example, it can depend on your age.

You can use the service for:

  • allergic rhinitis and allergic conjunctivitis - if age 2 or over
  • infective conjunctivitis - if age 6 months or older
  • cold sores and oral thrush - if age 1 month or older
  • impetigo - if age 2 months or older
  • shingles - if age 18 or older
  • cystitis in women - if age 16 to 64
  • vaginal thrush - if age 16 to 60

You may not be eligible for other reasons, such as a condition keeps coming back.

Your pharmacist will tell you if you are eligible.

If you are not eligible for the service, they may still be able to give you advice about your condition.

Or you can go to your GP.

Book an Appointment or Call In

For your convenience, you can book an appointment through our pharmacy app or via our website at a time that suits you.

We also welcome walk-ins, however please note that you may need to wait until the pharmacist is available to carry out your consultation. Booking ahead can help reduce waiting time and ensure you’re seen promptly.
